It is amazing how Marianna has captured the essence of growing up in rural Sicily during such a turbulent time. My mother told me many stories about the terrible nights of hiding in the caves during the bombings, about uncouth peasants, and about distraught families who “gave away” their children so that their children could have a better life. And it was always about sacrificing anything and everything for the love of your family. I too have an “Aunt Nancy” and laughed and cried through many passages of this remarkable book. Thank you, Marianna, for reminding me how precious family life is and how truly resilient we all can be.
